You might think that Amador County in the California Sierra is a relatively new region for wine grapes, but it’s actually one of the first. Think about it, all those failed mining claims and disheartened prospectors needed some way to drown their sorrows. And since there were plenty of Europeans that joined the Gold Rush, planting grapes was natural. Within a few decades there were over 100 wineries in the area called the Motherlode - more than any other part of California at that time.
The end of the gold rush and prohibition did put the kibosh on Sierra’s wine community and it wasn’t until the 1960s that interest started to rekindle in this region as a site for premium wines. Even now production from Amador County only represents 1-2% of California’s wine grape crop, but over 25% of the gold medals won in state-wide competitions.
Scott Harvey was one of the pioneers in the resurgence of Amador County wines. As GM and Winemaker, he brought Santino Family's Amador County wines to prominence. In 1996 we was recruited as a co-founder of Folie a Deux and continued to feature Amador County fruit, including the popular Menage a Trois wines he created. In 2004 Scott and his wife Jana started Scott Harvey Wines.

Scott Harvey has two lines of wines. The Scott Harvey label features their signature Zinfandel, Syrah and Barbera wines. The Jana label featuring Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, is lead by Scott's wife Jana, a wine industry veteran.
The Harveys set out to make food friendly wines that are approachable, brimming with luscious fruit and that over deliver for the price. And I think they hit the mark. Their wines across the board are nicely balanced with mouth filling fruit, and subtle but interesting complexity in a ready to drink style.

What I like:

Tasting:
They have multiple tasting rooms - Clarksburg, Sutter Creek and Plymouth.
They also have a really fun Virtual Tasting Program where they offer several tasting packages that you and friends or family can use to create a personal tasting event. It's a minimum of 4 packages to schedule an event which will be hosted virtually by the Scott Harvey tasting staff.
